Coltimus Prime Will Work In Between Races on Tuesday, July 22nd
With 10 days remaining before the 79thedition of the Prince of Wales Stakes, trainers are starting to make serious decisions with regards to their entrants for the second jewel of Canada’s Triple Crown.
Smart Spree, trained by Mark Frostad for owner Augustin Stable worked this morning over the Woodbine dirt training track in 1:00 flat. Smart Spree is a son of Smart Strike who has yet to break his maiden. Frostad has won the Prince of Wales on two occasions, most recently with Scatter the Gold in 2000 for Sam Son Farm.
Woodbine based trainer Josie Carroll has made arrangements with the Fort Erie Race Office to have her runner Ami’s Holiday, who was second in the Queen’s Plate, ship to Fort Erie on Sunday July 19th to train over the surface during the morning and paddock school in front of the public during the live race card.
Trainer Justin Nixon has also made arrangements to ship his charge Coltimus Prime into the Fort Erie backstretch to get used to his new surroundings. The homebred for Cabernet Racing Stables plans to have all eyes on him in between the third and fourth race on the July 22nd Twilight Tuesday card. The colt will breeze 5 furlongs under leading Fort Erie jockey Melanie Pinto. “We want to get a true feel for the track in the twilight conditions,” said Nixon over the phone on Saturday afternoon.
Breezing a horse in between the races is extremely rare and will be a welcome attraction during the Tuesday program.
The $500,000 Prince of Wales Stakes will be run on Tuesday, July 29th at 7:42pm. Parking and admission are free.
