Horse rescued from sinkhole in Fort Erie Backstretch

FORT ERIE, July 11, 2019 - Earlier this morning, a horse was safely rescued from a sinkhole in the backstretch at Fort Erie Race Track.

Mr Changue, trained by Ken Albu, was grazing this morning and the ground gave way, creating a sinkhole which was caused by a broken water main.

Key members of our maintenance, security and race office staff have been trained through programs such as the Large Animal Emergency Rescue Training on how to manage these situations. Along with the help of our horsepeople and the Fort Erie Fire Department, they were able to rescue the horse from the sinkhole safely and unharmed.

“The safety of our horses is always a priority. We would like to thank our horse people, staff, and local fire department for assisting with the safe rescue of one of our equine athletes today,” said Tom Valiquette, chief operating and financial officer of the Fort Erie Live Racing Consortium.
