Jumping into Fall Racing with the Puss N Boots Cup

FORT ERIE - August 28 – Fort Erie Race Track is kicking off the fall racing schedule this Saturday, Sept. 2 with the annual Puss N Boots Cup, one of Fort Erie’s most popular racing events. First race post time is 1:20 p.m.

Fifty-six years ago, a horse named Puss N Boots was leading a race at the top of the stretch, but decided to jump the rail and go for a swim in the infield pond. Each year, Fort Erie Race Track runs the Puss N Boots Cup in his honour, and the winning connections often take the same plunge into the infield pond.

The Puss N Boots Cup is the feature race on Saturday’s card, which will be the first day of the new fall racing schedule. Racing will run every Saturday and Tuesday afternoon at Fort Erie Race Track from September 2 to October 17, beginning at 1:20 p.m.

New to the event calendar this season is Fort Erie’s Fall Fair and Retired Racehorse Showcase, taking place on Saturday, Sept. 16. In addition to free activities for the kids, the fall fair will feature some of Fort Erie’s former racehorses who have gone on to have impressive second careers after horseracing. Horses and their new owners will be at the track for the day, giving racing fans and horse lovers an opportunity to meet and learn about the horses.

One of the day’s highlights will include demonstrations by former racehorses Soar and Bowdrie, owned by Lindsey Partridge, founder of the Harmony Horsemanship training program, and referred to as Canada’s horse whisperer.

Soar is a former Fort Erie racehorse who found her second career through working with Partridge. She has starred in two feature films, and won the 2015 Most Wanted Thoroughbred title against hundreds of competitors at the Retired Racehorse Project in Kentucky. Bowdrie is Partridge’s 2017 makeover horse, and will be competing at this year’s Retired Racehorse Project in October.

Parking and admission are always free at Fort Erie Race Track. For more information, visit forterieracing.com.
